KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Trailing 11-6 midway through the second half, the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team came back to grind out a tough 13-12 overtime-victory over Millersville University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Keystone Field.
It was senior
Madison Carlucci (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) who bounced in
the game-winning goal 2:06 into the sudden-death overtime against the Marauders.
The Golden Bears (7-6, 3-5 PSAC) were up against the ropes down the stretch, trailing Millersville 11-6 with just over 16 minutes remaining, as well as 12-10 with 8:30 left in regulation.
As she has done all season,
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) came up huge for the Maroon and Gold, notching her fifth and sixth goals of the game down the stretch, the latter coming with 2:55 to go, to cap a 6-1 run and reset the score to send the Golden Bears into overtime.
Gabriele's game-high six goals were one shy of tying the school record. She also earned a career-high eight points.
Notably, with her stellar performance, Gabriele now moves into third all-time with 119 goals for her career and is currently tied for eighth all-time in single-season goals with 36.
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) tallied four groundballs and a game-high six draw controls to move into second all-time in single-season history with 50 draw controls.
On the defensive side,
Courtney O'Neill (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) finished the contest with four groundballs and two caused turnovers. She is now tied for fifth in single-season history with 31 caused turnovers.
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) ended the game with a game-high four caused turnovers, a career-high for the freshman.
With an assist,
Lauren Huggins (Media, Pa./Penncrest) moved into second in KU history with 45 for her career, and she is now tied for ninth all-time in single-season history with 16.
The high-octane contest was in the favor of Millersville (5-7, 2-5) early on, as it commanded an 8-4 advantage heading into the second half.
Despite Kutztown snagging the first goal of the second half, Millersville responded with back-to-back scores to increase its advantage to 10-6. The two teams then traded scores to bring the score to 11-6 with 22:03 remaining.
Neither team would score again until Gabriele found Carlucci to begin the comeback with 16:15 showing.
The Golden Bears will have a short break before facing off against East Stroudsburg University at Keystone Field field on Tuesday, April 18. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
