KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team fell to No. 11 Mercyhurst, 16-5, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) battle inside of Andre Reed Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With her two-goal performance,
Lauren Huggins (Media, Pa./Penncrest) moved into eighth in KU history with 110 career points. Also recording a caused turnover and three ground balls, she is now fifth all-time with 58 career caused turnovers and ninth with 96 career groundballs.
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) scored KU's three other goals, moving her into fourth in the program annals with 107 goals and 138 points in her career.
Amanda Lehman (York, Pa./West York Area) led all players with a career-high five groundballs and four caused turnovers.
The Golden Bears (5-4, 1-4) were keeping up with the nationally-ranked Lakers in the early stages of the game, as Huggins' first goal made it 3-1 with 23:11 left in the first half.
The game would remain scoreless for the next 12:56 until Mercyhurst (5-2, 3-1) regained its three-goal advantage with 10:15 showing. That would be the first of four Laker goals in a span of less than four minutes to make the score 7-1, but KU seemed to steal the momentum heading into the half after Huggins scored unassisted 44 seconds ahead of the break.
Mercyhurst would steal it right back though with one final first half score seven seconds before the horn, and the Lakers scored the first two and seven of the first eight goals in the second half to take an 11-goal lead, 15-4, with 10:25 to play.
The Maroon and Gold will be traveling for their final non-conference showdown against Philadelphia University on Wednesday, April 5. The game is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
