CLERMONT, Fla. – The Kutztown University softball team returned to action at the NTC College Spring Games Thursday, dropping game one of a doubleheader to Wayne State, 9-6, before rallying to finish the day with a 2-1 victory over Philadelphia University.
Despite 24th-ranked Wayne State (16-5) taking an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, Kutztown (11-8) responded shortly thereafter, sparked by
Gia Santigate (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by-the-Sea) driving home
Tamara Jennings (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) with her first RBI of the day.
Gabby Tareila (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) later scored on a wild pitch, followed by
Angie Carty (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) taking home on a passed ball to cap the first inning tied at 3-3.
Wayne State's final seven runs of the afternoon were all unearned. Three of those runs came in the top of the fourth inning, allowing the Warriors to take another short-lived lead until the Golden Bears once again closed the gap and ended the fourth inning with the score tied, 6-6.
Unfortunately, the top of the fifth allowed Wayne State to notch two more additional unearned runs, pulling away for the rest of the afternoon.
Pitcher
Bridget Newman (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) spent 4.2 innings in the circle, allowing 10 hits and eight runs – two earned - with two strikeouts.
The nightcap brought about a welcomed change of pace for the Golden Bears, as KU defeated Philadelphia University, 2-1.
Philadelphia U. took an early lead with an RBI in the bottom of the third, but the Golden Bears caught fire with two back-to-back runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Tareila doubled to left-center field, knocking
Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) home to make the game tied at 1-1. Luckily, a Philadelphia University error immediately after allowed Tareila to take home and end the day with a Maroon and Gold win.
Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) threw a complete-game victory, only allowing one run off eight hits, along with two strikeouts.
Tareila led the Golden Bears' performance on the day with four hits, two runs and eight putouts.
The Maroon and Gold wrap up the NTC College Spring Games tomorrow, Friday, March 17, with another doubleheader against Dominican and Bridgeport. Game one against Dominican begins at 10:30 a.m.
