KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 10 Kutztown University men's basketball team put on a show for its home crowd with a decisive 100-69 victory – its tenth straight - over Lock Haven University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup inside of Keystone Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The 10 consecutive wins are the most for KU (14-2 PSAC, 18-2) since it won 10 in a row in 2010-11. An 11th straight win on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Keystone Arena against Mansfield would be the most for the Golden Bears since the 2009-10 team began the season with a 14-game winning streak.
In a game that started out with a 7-2 Lock Haven lead, Kutztown responded with 12 unanswered and quite simply, never looked back. The Maroon and Gold's lead would reach 13 with 4:21 left in the half, and KUwould hold a 10-point advantage, 46-36, heading into the break.
Lock Haven (6-10, 10-10) would score the first four points of the second half in just 34 seconds to close within six, but KU responded with a 10-2 run over the next 2:23 to go on top 56-42 on two
Dan Cuevas (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) free throws, and the lead would remain double-digits the remainder of the afternoon.
Kutztown was paced by
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), who finished the game with 20 points, a career-high 14 rebounds and two blocks. With the 20-point performance, Johnson moved into fourth place in program history with 1,544 for his career.
Cuevas was right behind Johnson with 19 points, the ninth time in 10 games he has scored 15+ points.
Once again,
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) flirted with a triple-double. The junior notched 18 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and three steals for his team-leading sixth double-double of the season. He shot 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) and
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) Lee, who notably made the game-winning layup with 2.2 seconds left the last time these two teams met on Jan. 6, rounded out the brunt of the offensive output with 13 points apiece. Connolly finished with three triples, while Lee added six rebounds and two steals. Both finished 4-for-4 from the line.
KU shot 25-of-26 from the line as a team, its highest percentage in a game since going a perfect 13-for-13 at Mansfield on Jan. 25, 2012.
Kutztown outrebounded Lock Haven 47-35 – tied for its highest margin of the season – and outscored the Bald Eagles 23-12 in points off turnovers.
Lock Haven was paced by redshirt-freshman Amir Hinton, who finished with 27 points. Behind Hinton was Tarojae Brake, who had 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) received a commemorative ball prior to tip for becoming the 25th Golden Bear to score his 1,000th career point earlier this season.
