HAMPTON, Va. –
Mike Kammerer (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) struck out a career-high 12 batters in five innings, and the Kutztown University baseball team supported him with eight runs in the first three innings in its 11-6 season-opening victory Thursday night against Indiana University (PA) at the Builder Invite in Virginia.
Kammerer struck out 12-of-18 batters he faced Thursday night. He allowed two hits, one walk and one run – none earned. He allowed an unearned run in the first, but responded by striking out the side in the second and retiring nine in a row. By that point, KU held an 8-1 lead in the fourth.
The Golden Bear offense was eager to get outdoors and begin its season under the lights. After IUP scored an unearned run in the top of the first, KU loaded the bases in the bottom half with no outs.
Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)) drove in two of them with a two-run single for a 2-1 KU lead that it never gave up.
Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) went 3-for-4, highlighted by a two-run triple in the second. He went on to score on a sacrifice fly by
Ryan Cox (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell (St. Bonaventure)) for a 5-1 lead through two.
Joe Santospago (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Mercer County C.C.)) hit a two-run homer in the third, and Cox drove in his second run of the game later in the inning to extend KU's lead to 8-1 through three.
Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) drove in a run in the sixth, and after IUP scored four in the eighth, Kutztown's
Zack Delp (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) struck gold in his first career game on the diamond. After a four-year career as an all-conference linebacker for the KU football team, Delp showcased his power Thursday night with a two-run homer in the eighth in his first game with the Golden Bear baseball team.
KU used three relief pitchers behind Kammerer to pitch the final four innings.
Ryan Clow (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and
Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish (Ephrata, Pa., Ephrata) highlighted the relievers with scoreless innings of relief.
The Golden Bears return to action tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 24, against the Newport News Apprentice School at 12 p.m.
