KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 6 Kutztown University men's basketball team celebrated Senior Day with its 14th straight victory, tied for the third-longest in program history, as it defeated Millersville 90-78 on Saturday afternoon inside of Keystone Arena to stay atop the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division with two games remaining in the regular season.
The 14-game winning streak is the longest since the 2009-10 team began its season 14-0. KU (22-2, 18-2 PSAC) also moved into fourth in the program annals for wins in a season and tied last year's team for most PSAC victories in program history.
Kutztown can clinch at least a share of its second consecutive PSAC East title, and sixth in the last 10 years, with a win at Bloomsburg on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Millersville (8-16, 7-13) kept the game competitive most of the afternoon, even taking its first and only lead, 31-30, with 4:03 remaining in the first half.
KU responded with 11 unanswered though and would lead by at least five the remainder of the afternoon.
Dan Cuevas (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg)' jumper with 1:14 to go made the score 41-31, and after Millersville closed within five,
Howard Sellars (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area (Saint Peter's)) drained a 3-pointer seven seconds before the halftime buzzer to make the score 44-36 at the break.
Kutztown extended its lead to double-digits multiple times in the second half, including just 1:15 out of the locker room on a
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) tip-in that made the score 48-38.
KU also led by 10, 65-55, after
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin)'s 3-pointer with 11:57 left and pushed the advantage to a game-high 13 when a Johnson dunk put the Golden Bears on top 72-59 exactly three minutes later.
Millersville proved tough to put away once more though, scoring eight in a row to close within five, 67-72, for the first time in the second half when Marcus Adkison drained a 3-pointer. The Marauders made it a five-point game on two other occasions, including as late as making it 72-77 with just 4:06 to play on yet another Adkison triple.
Each time KU had the answer as it was Johnson and Cuevas making layups on back-to-back possessions to push the lead back to nine just 47 seconds later. Johnson then converted a 3-point play with just 1:49 remaining to give the Maroon and Gold a double-digit lead for good.
Johnson was a force all afternoon as he fell one rebound short of his second consecutive double-double and fourth in the last five games. Playing in the final regular season home game of his career, he poured in a season-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting, which included shooting a career-best 3-for-4 from 3-point range and 3-of-3 at the line.
As a team, Kutztown made 20-of-25 (80.0 percent) from the foul line and 10-of-25 (40.0) form 3-point range.
KU also outrebounded Millersville 41-32, which led to an 18-6 edge in second-chance points, and despite only winning the turnover battle 12-10, outscored the Marauders in points off turnovers 17-8.
Cuevas also neared a double-double, the first of his career, with 15 points and eight rebounds to help the Golden Bear bench outscore Millersville's bench 39-19.
Ridgeway had 13 points and dished out a game-high seven assists to move into third place in program history with 409 for his career. Remarkably, he has already surpassed 200 assists for the season in just 24 games.
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) rounded out Kutztown's double-digit scorers with 11 points while adding three assists.
Honored prior to tip, Sellars scored KU's first six points of the afternoon and finished the game with nine. It was his third straight game of 9+ points after having just one this seaosn prior to the stretch.
Fellow seniors
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) and
Austin Beidelman (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) added eight points and four assists each.
Kutztown's final senior,
Martin Dietrich (Maytown, Pa./Donegal), had a career-high two steals.
Adkison led four Marauders in double-figures with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Jordan Greene added 13 points and team-highs of seven rebounds and five assists.
