PREVIEW: Women's Basketball Looks to Extend Winning Streak against East Stroudsburg Wednesday Night

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team returns home in search of their fourth-straight win in the team's next Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division contest against East Stroudsburg University this Wednesday, Feb. 15, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Keystone Arena.

Kutztown(10-16, 7-11 PSAC), fresh off of an impressive 78-56 victory against Cheyney University on Saturday, Feb. 11, is currently tied for fourth in the PSAC East with four games remaining in the season.

A neck-and-neck first quarter capped by Sierra Taylor (Williamstown, N.J./Camden Catholic)'s free throw with four seconds left allowed both teams to open the second tied at 15 points. Just 29 seconds into the second, a jumper from Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) gave the Maroon and Gold the lead for good as they pulled away from the Wolves for the rest of the afternoon and entered the locker room with a 30-23 advantage.

KU kept a close lead over the Wolves until early in the fourth, where Kara Funk (Dover, Pa./Dover)'s layup 24 seconds into the period helped Kutztown gain a comfortable lead for the rest of the afternoon.

Turnovers played a major role in the Golden Bear win; Kutztown scored 18 points off of turnovers, compared to just two from the Wolves.

Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia U.)) led the charge for the Golden Bears with a double-double on Saturday afternoon, racking up a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds to move into 20th in the PSAC in points per game (12.9) and 12th in rebounds per game (7.3).

Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) made her 54th 3-pointer of the season to move into eighth place in the program's single-season history, along with third in the PSAC for 3-pointers per game (2.3). She is currently just 10 3-pointers behind all-time leader Danielle Warntz (2000-04).

The Maroon and Gold fell in their previous matchup against second place East Stroudsburg (15-7, 11-7) on Jan. 11, 74-62. Two 14-0 runs gave ESU a 45-19 advantage at the half. Although KU outscored East Stroudsburg 43-29 in the second half, the deficit was too large to overcome. Keifonna Ferguson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area)'s free throws at the 21-second mark brought about the Golden Bears' smallest point deficit of the second half and the final score of the evening.

The Warriors will enter Wednesday winners of six straight as they most recently defeated West Chester 74-61 on Saturday. They are led by Allison Howard, whose team-leading 14.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game both rank 14th in the PSAC.

Following Wednesday evening's matchup, the Golden Bears return home to host Millersville for Senior Day this Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.
