Women’s Basketball Tripped Up by Seton Hill

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team was outscored 66-35 in the final three quarters, falling to the Seton Hill Griffins 92-66 at home on Saturday afternoon, snapping a four-game win streak.

Clinging to a 26-21 lead after the opening quarter, a hot-shooting Griffin squad went on an 11-1 run to begin the second quarter, establishing a 15-point margin, up 37-22, that they would not relinquish. Jenna Kaufman scored a game-high 30 points for Seton Hill, knocking down two crucial three-pointers during that second-quarter spurt and going 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.

KU made a push of its own, scoring seven of the first nine points to open the third quarter, trimming the deficit to ten on a Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) three-pointer. On its next possession, Thames had a chance to decrease the margin to single digits at the free-throw line, but missed both attempts, sparking a 23-6 SHU run to close the third that ultimately put the game out of reach for the Golden Bears.

Three players scored in double-digits for Kutztown, led by Thames' who finished with 15 points, two assists and two steals. Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) chipped in 12 points, four rebounds and three assists while Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) added 11 points and one block.

As a team, the Maroon and Gold shot 36.8 percent from the field (25-68), 23.5 percent from deep (4-17) and 52.2 percent from the line (12-23). On the flip side, Seton Hill shot 54.7 percent, 43.5 percent and 75 percent in those respective categories, as the Griffins were efficient on the offensive end from the opening tip.

Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) provided some good minutes off the bench in this contest, shooting 3-of-6 from the field and making three free throws, finishing her afternoon with nine points, two rebounds and a team-high three assists. Jenna Widdicombe (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II (West Chester)) paced Kutztown in the rebounding category, collecting five boards, three of which came on the offensive end, and chipping in four points.

The loss for KU (6-4, 2-3 PSAC) ends a five-game home winning streak and a four-game overall streak while Seton Hill (5-3, 3-2 PSAC) gets its second win in a row, defeating West Chester on Dec. 3.

The Golden Bears will have one final contest before the end of the fall semester, taking on Georgian Court University in a non-conference tilt on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 4 p.m.
