NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Kutztown University women's bowling team racked up a tournament-high total of 4,256 pins, going 3-2 in its Baker-style matches, on the opening day of the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Wilmington University.
KU's opening two matches were very competitive, but it fell to both Medaille University and Chestnut Hill College despite posting a solid combined total of 1,723 pins through its first two contests. Medaille claimed the victory to open the day, 841-816, and Chestnut Hill defeated Kutztown in the following match, 928-907.
The Maroon and Gold's next match, against Mount Aloysius College, seem to turn the tides, however, for both the match results and overall pin totals. The Golden Bears exploded for a 1,048-868 victory over MAC, securing their first win of the day and also the highest single-match pin total of all the participating teams.
Using this victory as a launching pad, Kutztown cruised to match victories over Pitt-Bradford (888-717) and the host, Wilmington (867-812), to finish the first day with a 3-2 overall record, but, more importantly, the highest pin total by 59 pins headed into the second day of the three-day competition.
Individually, all five Golden Bear bowlers held frame averages of at least 18 pins per frame, with
Jenn Fitts (Birdsboro, Pa./Twin Valley) recording the high average of 19.02 ppf in 50 frames of action. Behind Fitts,
Keanna Delp (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) finished the day with an 18.9 ppf, also bowling in all 50 frames of today's Baker-style matches.
Dana Henry (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township),
Megan Bauter (Spring Lake, N.J./Manasquan) and
Angela Kozma (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) all made contributions to their team's first-place total, bowling frame averages of 18.8, 18.4 and 18.12, respectively.
KU gets back on the lanes tomorrow for another round of five matches, of which will be the traditional style, against New Jersey City, Penn State Altoona, Belmont Abbey, No. 15 Adelphi and LIU Post, beginning at 10 a.m.
