KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team was defeated by the Edinboro University Fighting Scots, 3-0 (17-25, 24-26, 17-25), in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup on Friday night inside Keystone Arena.

The Maroon and Gold battled with Edinboro early in the opening frame, tying the score at five a-piece on a kill from Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham). In the middle portion of the set, however, the Fighting Scot offense caught fire, using an 8-2 run to establish a 13-7 advantage.

Despite back-and-forth play for the remainder of the first set, the Fighting Scots used this margin to keep KU at a comfortable distance, finishing off the frame with three straight points to claim a 25-17 victory.

Continuing the back-and-forth play into the second set, Kutztown played its best volleyball of the evening in the middle frame. Three consecutive kills, one from Madelyn Edsell (Wyalusing, Pa./Wyalusing) sandwiched by two more from Owen, gave the Golden Bears a 15-13 lead, prompting a timeout from the Fighting Scots.

The break in action allowed Edinboro to regain some composure, tying the score at 17-all, setting this frame up for a photo finish. Although the Fighting Scots were able to take a 24-21 advantage late, the Maroon and Gold staved off three match points punctuated by a Moyer kill to tie the score at 24-24, forcing a second Edinboro TO.

Following the timeout, the Fighting Scots made the crucial push, scoring two straight points to down KU in an exciting second set, 26-24. As a team, the Maroon and Gold had 16 kills in the second frame, hitting at a .205 clip.

Set three began in a similar competitive fashion as the first two frames, but Edinboro eventually gained the upper hand, using a 7-1 run to go on top, 14-7. Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), whom served excellently all match, did her best to bring Kutztown back into this set late, running off four straight tallies from the service line to make the score 21-14, but the midset push from the Fighting Scots proved too much. Edinboro finished off the final frame by a score of 25-17, sweeping the match in straight sets.

Owen led the way offensively with ten kills and a .296 attack percentage, adding a block assist in three sets of action. Jessica Howe (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) came in right behind Owen, hitting .286 with six kills and a block assist of her own.

Defensively, Alli Henderson (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) and Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) each racked up double-digit digs, posting 18 and 15 to lead the KU backline.  Setters Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area) and Madisyn Kleinfelter (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) combined for 27 assists on Kutztown's 32 total kills.

The Golden Bears fall to 7-19 and 2-12 in PSAC competition while the Fighting Scots' record improves to 17-8 overall and 7-7 in the PSAC.

The Maroon and Gold get back on the court tomorrow afternoon, facing off with Slippery Rock University at 1 p.m.
