KU Downed by No. 10 Cal in PSAC Opener

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team was defeated by the No. 10-ranked California University (PA) Vulcans, 73-47, in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) lid-lifter on Saturday afternoon.

KU was outscored 20-9 in the opening quarter and 26-15 in the second stanza as the Vulcan offense was firing on all cylinders in the opening twenty minutes. Cal was led by DJ Hahn, who scored 21 points in the first half, going five-of-five from distance, pacing the Vulcans to a 46-24 halftime advantage. This large margin proved too much for the Maroon and Gold to overcome in what was a relatively one-sided affair from the opening tip.

Hahn finished with 27 points, seven rebounds and four steals in the contest for a Vulcan defense which collected a combined 22 steals. Shatara Parsons complimented the outside shooting prowess shown by Hahn with effective play in the post, scoring 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

The second half was much more competitive as the Golden Bear defense limited California to a combined 27 points in the final two quarters. Additionally, KU outscored the Vulcans in the final quarter, 14-12, led by Kaylan Jackson who scored five in the final frame.

Jackson was the lone Kutztown player in double-digits, scoring 11 points in 21 minutes of action, shooting four-of-four from the charity stripe. Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) chipped in eight points off the bench, as the non-starters for KU contributed admirably with 29 combined points. Jenna Widdicombe (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II (West Chester)) filled the stat sheet in just 18 minutes of play, scoring three points and collected five rebounds, one block and two steals.

The Maroon and Gold (2-2, 0-1 PSAC) will look to get back to .500 in PSAC play with a contest at Slippery Rock University at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
