KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In its first contest since earning a No. 1 national ranking, the Kutztown University women's soccer team shutout the Clarion University Golden Eagles on Sunday afternoon, 6-0.
The Golden Bears created a few scoring chances early on, but were unable to convert in the first 18 minutes of action on a humid, overcast day on the Keystone Field pitch. At the 18:45 mark,
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) took matters into her own hands, maneuvering through the Clarion backline and firing a curling left-footed shot into the back of the net from 25 yards out.
Nine minutes before the stroke of halftime, fellow sophomore
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) headed in a cross on a corner from
Angela Motolese (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh (Fairleigh Dickinson)) to put KU ahead 2-0 at the break.
In the first minute of the second half, the Golden Eagle goalkeeper misplayed a cross from Zwiercan which eventually found the foot of
Kate Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), who finished it to start Kutztown's second-half scoring barrage.
At the 64:41 mark,
Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) charged downfield, beating the final Clarion defender with a perfect touch and hammering a left-footed shot into the top-right corner to give the Golden Bears a four-goal advantage. Shortly thereafter, Motolese scored her first goal of the season, connecting with
Sam LaBianca (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) on a long through ball for KU's second goal in a three-minute span.
As time ticked away, Kutztown converted on its final offensive possession when
Courtney Browning (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) found
Maggie Cecere (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) with three seconds remaining for the final goal of the match, securing a 6-0 victory for KU (11-0 overall, 9-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference).
The six total goals for the Golden Bears are the most for the program since a 7-1 win over Mercyhurst on Nov. 2 2013. Additionally, this is the first time since 2002 that Kutztown has had six different goal scorers in a match.
This is the seventh shutout of the season for the KU backline and its fifth in six tries at home. Goalkeeper
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) moves to 7-0 on the season in net, saving the lone shot on goal for Clarion.
In its next match, No. 1 Kutztown will square off with the Shippensburg University Raiders at 3 p.m. on Tuesday Oct. 10.
