MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The No. 13 Kutztown University men's basketball team won its seventh straight game on Saturday afternoon, defeating Millersville 81-67 to secure its first seven-game winning streak since November and December of 2014. The Golden Bears remained in second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division with the victory.
KU (11-2 PSAC, 15-2) overcame its only deficit of the afternoon, 4-0, by scoring nine unanswered and would lead through the remainder of the contest. The Maroon and Gold pushed the lead to double digits at the 10:09 mark of the first half with nine straight points and would carry a 12-point lead into halftime thanks to 25-7 run, which included a stretch of 13 consecutive points, that extended the lead to as high as 19, 40-21, with 4:35 to play in the first half.
Millersville (4-9, 5-12) would get as close as five midway through the second half but could never make it a one-possession game.
All five starters scored 9+ points, led by
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington)'s 17 on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. In addition to adding four rebounds, the redshirt-sophomore had multiple steals for the tenth time in 11 contests.
Dan Cuevas (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) was right behind him with 16 points, while
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) tallied 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Johnson also had three steals.
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) led all players with four steals and also dished out a team-high six assists to go along with 14 points to move into fourth place in single-season program history with 140 assists for the year.
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) approached a double-double with nine points and a season-high eight rebounds while also adding two assists and two steals.
Behind Johnson and Connolly, Kutztown's +7 rebounding margin (38-31) was its second-highest of the season. The Golden Bears went 21-of-29 (72.4 percent) from the free throw line for to surpass 20 foul shots made for the fourth time in 2016-17. KU also outscored Millersville 12-4 in the fastbreak.
Millersville made just eight free throws and committed 21 turnovers – the eighth time this season that Kutztown has forced 20+ turnovers.
Cornell Yarde II led the Marauders with 16 points and seven assists, while Jordan Greene added 14 points and eight rebounds.
KU returns to Keystone Arena to host West Chester on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The contest will mark the conclusion of "Bears Give Back" – KU's month-long food drive that will donate all non-perishable food donations to the on-campus food pantry and Friends Inc.
