KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Sierra Taylor (Williamstown, N.J./Camden Catholic) hit a lengthy game-tying jumper with 23.2 seconds left, Bloomsburg University drove the length of the floor and found Morgan Klunk for the go-ahead layup with 14.3 seconds left, but KU was unable to get off a shot on its final possession as the Kutztown University women's basketball team fell 68-66 Wednesday night at Keystone Arena.
On the final possession, Bloomsburg had two fouls to give and used them both to cut KU's time from 14 seconds, to six. Its ensuing inbound went to the top of the key and then to the corner, where Kutztown was unable to get a final shot attempt off before the buzzer sounded.
Four days following its biggest comeback-win of the decade of 25 points at Mansfield, KU saw Bloomsburg rattle off a 21-2 run to end the game and eliminate a 17-point Golden Bear lead. KU led 64-49 with 6:56 to play, but from then on, KU made 1-of-8 shots with six turnovers, while Bloomsburg made all six of its shot attempts and 8-of-10 free throws.
The Golden Bears (6-14, 3-9 PSAC East) remain in sixth place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division, while the win puts the Huskies (4-12, 3-9) in a matching tie for sixth – the final playoff spot in the PSAC East.
Tied with 1:00 to play, KU looked for a back-door play but threw the ball out-of-bounds with 0:39 to play. Bloomsburg was aggressive and attacked the basket, getting to the free throw line and making both of its attempts for a two-point lead.
Taylor took the handoff with less than 30 seconds to play and turned her shoulder for a fading jumper that was nothing but net with 23.2 seconds to play to even the score at 66 apiece. Bloomsburg broke the full-court pressure and found Klunk in transition for the eventual game-winning bucket.
Taylor, this week's PSAC East Freshman of the Week, scored a team-high 17 points with four assists and a pair of 3-pointers.
Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia U.)) netted her first double-double of 2017 and fifth of the season. She grabbed 14 rebounds and scored 10 points with two steals.
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) scored 11 points and extended her school-record streak to 44 consecutive games with a made 3-pointer, while sophomore
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) also added 11 points – her third double-digit scoring effort in KU's last four games.
KU out-rebounded Bloomsburg 42-28.
Keifonna Ferguson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) grabbed nine of those rebounds, four offensive, as Kutztown had 20 second-chance points.
Klunk led Bloomsburg to its 15th straight win over Kutztown. She scored 20 points with six rebounds, six steals, three blocks and three assists. She made all eight of her free throws. Alyssa Mack scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Alex Ross (11) and Taylor Montana (10) rounded out Bloomsburg's double-digit scorers.
Kutztown returns to PSAC East action on Saturday, Jan. 21, with a road contest at Millersville University beginning at 1 p.m.
