Curry’s Golden Goal in Double Overtime Completes Comeback at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area)'s goal in the third minute of double overtime gave the Kutztown University women's soccer team a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Wednesday evening at Shippensburg.

The Golden Bears (5-2, 4-2 PSAC) have won four of their last five matches and now sit in a tie for third in the league standings with 12 points.

The game-winner completed a ferocious effort to avoid a tie as KU recorded the final 14 shots of the contest, nine of which were on net, with Shippensburg's (5-3, 3-3 PSAC) final attempt coming in the 63rd minute.

The score came on a turnover at the top of the box, giving Curry the opportunity to slot her shot into the lower left corner for her second goal of the year. It was also career goal number 21 for the senior, moving her into a tie for sixth place in program history.

Moments earlier, Curry had sent an attempted header wide to begin action in the second overtime period.

Curry's game-winner would not have been possible if not for sophomore Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) equalizing in the 63rd minute with her first score of the season. With Kutztown on the counter attack, freshman Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) found Ryan in the middle of the box for her first career assist.

Just over a minute later, sophomore Imani Taylor (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) made one of her career-high nine saves to keep the game tied in what turned out to be Shippensburg's last shot of the evening. Immediately following that attempt, the Raiders held an 18-10 edge in the category.

The stats would indicate otherwise as Kutztown's late dominance of play led to a 24-18 advantage in shots. The Golden Bears put 16 of those attempts on net, forcing Shippensburg goalkeeper Leah Roy to make 14 stops.

A wild scramble in the box led to Shippensburg's goal in the eighth minute as KU denied three consecutive shots on frame before the Raiders finally found the back of the net. The first of those three efforts got past Taylor but was cleared by a defender before the sophomore keeper was forced to make back-to-back saves moments later. She could not stop a third consecutive attempt though and SU was ahead through Bailey Bzdak just 7:53 in.

That set the table for a competitive first half that saw both teams constantly working the opposing goalie, with both keepers entering the break with six saves.

It was then Taylor who made the first three stops of the second half before KU began its late blitz on net with a Gabrielle Evans (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) attempt in the 78th minute.

KU takes a brief break from PSAC play on Monday, hosting Holy Family for its final nonconference match of the season at 4 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Keystone Field.
