KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 6 Kutztown University field hockey team fell behind 2-0 in the first half to No. 3 Shippensburg University Tuesday night, and despite a valiant second-half effort, the Golden Bears were unable to climb out of the early hole as they fell 3-0 in non-conference action at Andre Reed Stadium.
The Golden Bears (4-2) are in the midst of playing the past three NCAA national champions. KU, ranked No. 6 in Division II, fell to then-No. 6 and 2014 national champs in Millersville in double overtime last Saturday, 1-0. KU squared off against the 2013 champs in Shippensburg Tuesday night, and now looks ahead to the defending national champions and current No. 1 team in Division II, East Stroudsburg University, on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Shippensburg (6-1) controlled possession in the first half and capitalized for two goals to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. Kutztown improved its defense and midfield play in the second half to apply added pressure on the Raiders, but Shippensburg goalie Ally Mooney did not allow the comeback with a game-high seven saves.
Courtney Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) and
Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn) accounted for 8-of-10 Kutztown shots. Shippensburg's Lauren Zengulis scored on 2-of-3 shot attempts – both in the first half – as Noelle Kephart capped the scoring for Shippensburg in the 69th minute.
Kutztown looks ahead to a date with the defending champs on Saturday, Sept. 24, on the road at East Stroudsburg beginning at 1 p.m. The teams split their two meetings last year, each winning by one goal.
