KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) scored the second goal of her young freshman season on Tuesday, but two first-half goals from 23rd-ranked West Chester University were the difference as KU fell 3-1 Tuesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at North Campus Field.
The Golden Bears (3-2, 2-2 PSAC) fell victim to goals from short- and long-distance in the first half. On a West Chester corner kick in the 19th minute, a deflection found the foot of Nikki Zaso, who tapped home the goal from inside the six-yard box.
Shortly before halftime in the 37th minute, West Chester's Erica Hansen wound up from well outside the penalty box, striking home a goal just under the crossbar to give West Chester a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Business picked up for Kutztown in the second half. In the 54th minute,
Cara Griffith (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Prep) connected with Mohr on a cross as the freshman put a header past the Golden Ram keeper to cut the deficit to 2-1 with more than 35:00 to play.
Unfortunately for the Golden Bears, West Chester hammered home an insurance goal in the 65th minute to increase its lead to 3-1, a deficit KU could not climb back from.
West Chester (5-0, 5-0) held a 16-5 advantage in shots and 8-3 in corner kicks to remain undefeated.
Kutztown looks to get back in the win column this weekend, when it takes on another nationally-ranked opponent at home. 11th-ranked Edinboro University comes to town on Saturday, Sept. 17 for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Please stay tuned to
