KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Two Kutztown University women's lacrosse players etched their names in the school record books, KU earned its first win of the modern era over Bloomsburg University, but bottom-line – Kutztown just looked sharp in its 14-6 home victory at Keystone Field on Wednesday afternoon to kick-off the final week of the season.
The Golden Bears (7-9, 3-8 PSAC) led from start-to-finish against the Huskies (4-10, 2-9) and are in the midst of their most successful season in the modern era. KU has won more overall and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) games this year than any other since 2008 (program's re-establishment), and is in position for its best PSAC finish in the modern era.
KU has been led offensively all year by sophomores
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) and
Lauren Huggins (Media, Pa./Penncrest), who didn't disappoint on Wednesday. The duo that has scored more goals this year than other other single-season duo in KU history (83), combined for nine goals and 12 points on Wednesday, highlighted by a career-high-tying five goals from Huggins. She added four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Huggins has surged to a career-high 37 goals this year, seventh in the single-season record books.
Gabriele made her mark right from the draw. She had a career-high-tying eight draw controls on Wednesday to break the program's single-season record with 50 this season.
As a team, KU held a strong 17-5 advantage in draw controls.
Gabriele became KU's single-season scoring leader since the reestablishment in 2008. She has 46 goals this season, moving into second in single-season history behind Mary Anne Botto's school-record 60 from 1982. A sophomore, Gabriele surpassed 100 career points with four goals and two assists Wednesday, the eighth player in school history with 100+ points.
Courtney O'Neill (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) set the school-record for single-season caused turnovers. Her four on Wednesday gave her 38 this year, breaking Rachel Mehaffey's mark of 35 from 2009. Notably, each of O'Neill's three seasons rank in the top-four on the single-season leaderboard.
Freshmen
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and
Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) each scored twice against Bloomsburg and have combined for 37 goals this season.
Defensively, Kutztown significantly hindered Bloomsburg's ability to get clean looks at goal. In the cage,
Abby Cox (York, Pa./West York) posted the win with a career-high 14 saves.
For Bloomsburg, Brigid Kyne and Hannah Jaskuta each scored twice to lead the attack.
Kutztown will play its final game of the season on Friday, April 22 against Seton Hill University at 2 p.m. at Keystone Field.
