Senior Day Photo Gallery KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team scored twice in the final 5:00 of regulation to force overtime, but Slippery Rock's Kaytlin Callaghan scored 1:02 into the extra period to down the Golden Bears 12-11 on Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Keystone Field.
Saturday marked KU's final game of a three-game home-stand and the final Saturday home game of the year. It celebrated Senior Day on Saturday and the careers of
Riley Patrone (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and
Cara Lord (Media, Pa./Penncrest) during a pre-game ceremony.
Three Golden Bears netted hat-tricks in the setback, one day after winning a tight 11-10 contest on Friday over Edinboro.
Madison Carlucci (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) scored a career-high three goals, as did
Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic). Gabriele co-led the team with two assists along with
Lauren Huggins (Media, Pa./Penncrest), who also scored twice.
The Golden Bears (6-6, 2-5 PSAC) led 4-2 midway through the first half, but the Rock (7-3, 3-2) ended the half on a 5-1 run to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
Slippery Rock led 9-6 with 24:33 to play to cap a 7-2 run, but the Golden Bears answered back with three goals in a row, including two within 16 seconds of each other, to erase their deficit and tie the game at 9-9 with 14:16 to play.
The Rock put the pressure right back on KU with two goals in a row to take an 11-9 lead with 5:14 to play. With Slippery Rock looking to hold possession for the remainder of the game and KU down a player, Huggins forced a turnover in the SRU end and scored on a breakaway to cut the deficit to one, 11-10, with 3:49 to play.
Slippery Rock was charged with a yellow card with 1:58 to play, and on the ensuing free-position attempt, Carlucci tied the game at 11-11 to send the game to overtime.
Tia Torchia won the draw control in the sudden-victory overtime period for Slippery Rock, and with SRU advancing on offense, Callaghan drove to the right-side and scored to give Slippery Rock the 12-11 win.
Goalkeeper
Jen Bergey (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) played well for her second straight start in goal. She picked up six groundballs in the field and made six saves.
Courtney O'Neill (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) tied her career-high with six caused turnovers to go along with five groundballs and three draw controls.
Slippery Rock had nine different scorers and led the battle of draw controls, 14-11.
Kutztown hits the road for a three-game road-trip, beginning on Wednesday, April 6 at Millersville University beginning at 4 p.m.
