Baseball Gets Strong Pitching, Balanced Offense in Doubleheader Sweep

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team put on a strong performance in sweeping a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader against Mansfield University Sunday at North Campus Field.

The Golden Bears (17-17, 7-7 PSAC) won the opening game, 12-0, and took game two, 4-1.

KU's pitching staff combined to throw 14 innings of one-run ball, allowing nine hits and striking out nine Mansfield (13-17, 3-11 PSAC) batters over the course of the afternoon.

Paul Piromalli (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West (Mercer County C.C.)) started the opener and went six shutout innings with four strikeouts.  Anthony DeVito (Philadelphia, Pa./Central (Mercer County C.C.)) followed him with a complete-game in game two, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five.

The Golden Bears found themselves down 1-0, heading into the bottom of the third in game two, when a Brady McNab (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Frederick C.C.)) two-run double to right field put KU ahead 2-1.  Zach Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North (Mercer County C.C.)) followed him later in the inning, bombing a two-run shot over the left field fence to make it 4-1.

DeVito (4-1) allowed just two hits over the final four innings to close out the win.

In the opener, Kutztown jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom half of the fourth.  Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) got the Golden Bears on the board with an RBI-single up the middle to score McNab.  Brady Carras (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) then reached on an error on a deep hit to left-center, scoring Mike Milazzo (Titusville, N.J./Notre Dame) and Rottet.  Carras came around to score during the next at-bat, reaching home on a passed ball.

KU wouldn't look back for the rest of the game, plating two more runs in the fifth and six in the sixth to seal the 12-0 victory.  Eight different players drove in runs during the game.

McNab finished the day 2-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)) finished game one 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.  The Golden Bears offense was balanced over the two games, with 13 different players coming around to score.  Nine different KU batters recorded at least one hit in the contests.  Schram's homer was his second of the season.  Joe DiWilliams (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added two runs scored.

Zephan Kash went 1-for-3 with an RBI in game two for Mansfield.  Tanner Klein led MU in game one, going 2-for-3.

Kutztown turns around and travels to Mansfield's Joseph B. Shaute Field Monday, April 11 for another PSAC doubleheader.  First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
