WILSON, N.C. - The Kutztown University baseball team won both games of its doubleheader against Barton College Tuesday, taking game one 9-7 and the second game 3-1 at Nixon Field.
Mike White (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) stepped up as the hero in game one, hitting a sixth-inning grand slam to tie the game at seven.
Joe Santospago (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Mercer County C.C.)) followed it up later in the inning with a single to centerfield that drove in two runs to give the Golden Bears a 9-7 lead.
Pat Flynn (Pottstown, Pa./West-Mont Christian Academy) shutout Barton over the final 1.2 innings, striking out four to pick up his second save of the season.
In the second game, KU jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first when
Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)) doubled to left center to score
Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua). The Golden Bears added one run in both the third and sixth, getting RBIs from
Zach Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North (Mercer County C.C.)) and
Brady McNab (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Frederick C.C.)).
Starter
Anthony Atticks (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township (Harford C.C.)) went 6.1 innings allowing seven hits and one earned run while striking out eight to pick up his first victory of the season. Flynn once again came through in the clutch, throwing 0.2 scoreless innings to close the game out for Kutztown and pick up his third save of the year.
Santospago led the Golden Bears on offense, finishing the day a combined 5-for-9 with three RBIs, one run scored and a stolen base. O'Dell continued his hot-start to the season, going 4-for-7 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Mike Milazzo (Titusville, N.J./Notre Dame) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored during the opening game. Schram went 2-for-4 with an RBI during game two.
The Golden Bears are now 8-7 on the season and improved to 5-1 on their current spring break trip.
Hunter Pearre went 4-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored for Barton (14-5).
Kutztown returns to action with two more games Wednesday, March 9. The first is a rematch against Barton at 12 p.m. at Nixon Field. The Golden Bears then head back to Fleming Stadium to take on Clarion University at 7 p.m.
