Softball Wins Both Games in Monday Doubleheader

CLERMONT, Flor. – The Kutztown University softball team picked up two strong wins, outscoring its opponents 20-4 in a doubleheader during its spring break trip Monday morning.  The Golden Bears knocked off Ashland University in the opening game 7-0 and followed it with a 13-4 win over Felician University.

Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) led the charge for the Golden Bears, finishing the day a combined 5-for-7 with five RBIs, three stolen bases and three runs scored.  Nicki Mann (Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) followed her in the order and went 3-for-7 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Pitcher Bridget Newman (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored in the opening game to help her cause at the plate.  Newman went on to throw a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits in the process.  Rachel Lawes (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) rounded out the offense, going 4-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

In total, the Golden Bears batted a combined 30-for-65 (.462) with 12 players collecting hits and seven different players knocking in RBIs.  KU also added seven stolen bases.

In the opening game against Ashland (4-4), Kutztown jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning.  It turned out to be the only run it would need.  The Golden Bears went on to add two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to coast to the 7-0 victory.

Kutztown took its momentum and started the second game even stronger against Felician (6-8).  The Golden Bears exploded for seven runs in the first inning and never looked back during their 13-4 win.  Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) picked up her third win of the season in the victory.

With the wins the Golden Bears improved to 4-2 on their current road-trip and 8-6 on the season.

Kutztown returns to the diamond with two more games on Tuesday, March 7.  KU takes on Cedarville University at 9 a.m. and follows it up against Assumption College at 11 a.m.
