KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University's
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) hit a program-tying seven 3-pointers to give her a new school-record of 87 made 3-pointers on the season, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Bears dropped their regular-season finale 87-77 to visiting West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup Wednesday at Keystone Arena.
West Chester jumped out to a 4-2 lead and would hold onto it for the rest of the evening, leading for over 97 percent of the game.
WCU led 22-9 after the first, but a strong second quarter got the Golden Bears right back in it. West Chester stretched its lead to 32-14 a little more than four minutes into the second, but Kutztown ended it on a 19-6 run to make it 39-33 at the half. The run was highlighted by four-straight made baskets for
Gina Lewis (Atlantic City, N.J./Holy Spirit).
Kutztown (10-16, 7-15 PSAC) ran out of steam after its strong run as West Chester was able to push the lead back to 65-47 after three quarters. The Golden Rams would cruise during the fourth to hold onto the 10-point win, their 20th of the season.
The loss eliminated the Golden Bears from a chance at clinching the sixth-seed in the Eastern Division along with a postseason berth.
Altomare went 7-of-16 from beyond the arc, leading to a career-high 25 points and two assists. The 16-attempts broke her previous record for 3-pointers attempted during a single-game, which she set earlier this season. Her 87-made 3-pointers during the year passed Rachel Wisemiller's old mark of 81, set during the 2008-09 season. Altomare now has made 127 career 3-pointers, good for fifth in KU history.
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Lewis chipped in 13.
It was the last career game for Kutztown senior guard
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional). The four-year starter and team-captain finished with 10 points and eight assists. Lee ended her career with 1,239 points (eighth in KU history), 124 3-pointers (fifth), 388 assists (third), 189 steals (fourth) and 317 made free-throws (third). She started in all 110 of her career games. Lee ended the season with 136 assists, tied for fifth-most in KU history.
West Chester (20-6, 17-5) got a balanced-scoring attack from Kendall Benovy, Brittany Sicinski, Dallas Ely and Anna Kuntz. Benovy led the way with 17 points while Sicinski, Ely and Kuntz all added 13. West Chester had six scorers with at least nine points. Sicinski added nine assists.
Kutztown ends its year with double-digit wins for the fourth-straight season. The Golden Bears are set to have 11 players, including four starters, return for the 2016-17 season.
