KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University erased a halftime deficit and tied the game heading into the fourth quarter, but Shippensburg University used a +10 scoring advantage in the fourth to pull away for a 70-60 win over Kutztown Friday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division women's basketball matchup.
The teams were tied at 43-43 heading into the fourth, but Shippensburg shot 4-for-5 from 3-point range in the fourth and shot six more free throw attempts in the quarter to remain atop the PSAC East.
Three Golden Bears scored in double figures.
Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia U.)) led the way with 18 points – scoring above her average for the third time in four games. She scored 12 of her 18 in the first quarter, and finished 3-for-3 at the charity stripe, extending her streak to 16 straight free throws. She added a team-high five rebounds.
Sierra Taylor (Williamstown, N.J./Camden Catholic) finished with 14 points and six assists from her point guard position. It is the third time in four games she has dished out 6+ assists.
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) rounded out the double-figure trio, scoring 12 points. She nailed two 3-pointers to extend her school-record streak to 38 consecutive games with a made 3-pointer.
Lauren Gold helped led the Raiders in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of her 26 points in the final period. In the second-half alone, she was 4-of-5 from 3-point range to finish 5-of-9 from downtown.
Morgan Griffith notched a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. In the two meetings last year, she averaged 23.5 points and 11.5 rebounds against Kutztown.
Outside of one quarter, Kutztown protected the ball very well. It finished with a 19/10 assist/turnover ratio, with 6-of-10 turnovers coming in the second quarter, when Shippensburg held a 21-10 scoring advantage.
Kutztown (4-10, 1-5 PSAC East) moves to 2017 with its final PSAC crossover game of the season. KU hosts Clarion University on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
