PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team had two shots at the win in the final five seconds of regulation, but Chestnut Hill College held its ground and went on to defeat the Golden Bears in overtime on Saturday, 94-92, in non-conference action at Sorgenti Arena.
Free throws and a game-tying layup by Chestnut Hill with seven seconds left pushed the game to overtime. Both teams split free throws in the final 25 seconds, but following KU's attempts, the Griffins drove the length of the floor and tied the game at 77 with seven seconds left. KU managed two contested layup attempts in its final possession, but could not get a winner to fall.
Chestnut Hill opened overtime shooting 4-of-6 from the field to lead by five midway through the extra period. KU clawed back within one with 1:20 remaining, but Chestnut Hill made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold on for the win.
Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia U.)) and
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) both had double-doubles for the Golden Bears. Heck posted 26 points and 14 rebounds, both season-highs, on 10-of-26 shooting.
Watson notched her second-straight double-double with 19 points and a career-high-tying 16 rebounds. She moved into 10th all-time at KU with 653 career rebounds and into 11th in scoring (1,116) and free throws made (241).
Saturday marked the first time this season two Golden Bears had double-doubles in the same game, and the first time since Watson and
Gina Lewis (Atlantic City, N.J./Holy Spirit) on Feb. 20, 2016, at Mansfield.
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) scored 14 of her 17 points in the second half and overtime. She buried five 3-pointers, her school-record 35th straight game with a 3, and is three shy of tying Melissa McQuade for third all-time in school history.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Kutztown in the head-to-head series.
Chestnut Hill was +11 in rebounding, thanks to two double-doubles of its own. Jaeda Wildgoose led the way with 27 points and 12 rebounds on 12-of-16 shooting, while Mary Trossi followed with 17 points, including the game-tying layup in regulation, and 13 rebounds.
Vicky Tumasz scored 21 points off the bench, including a 9-for-10 clip from the free throw line.
As a team, the Griffins shot 23-of-35 from the free throw line, more than double the number of free throws KU attempted (16).
Notably for Kutztown, freshman
Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) returned to the rotation after missing the last eight games due to injury.
Kutztown returns to action on Monday afternoon, Dec. 19, with a road matchup at Philadelphia University beginning at 1 p.m.
