Women’s Basketball Ends Thanksgiving Break with 62-50 Setback to Washburn

BAYAMON, P.R. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team ended its Thanksgiving break trip to Puerto Rico with a 62-50 setback to Washburn on Friday morning at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez. 
 
Washburn (3-2) led throughout, scoring the first basket of the game, and held onto a 17-12 advantage after the first quarter. Following a low-scoring second quarter that made the score 26-19 at the half, the Ichabods outscored KU 20-13 in the quarter to take control of the contest.
 
Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia U.)) led Kutztown (1-5) with 13 points as she was a perfect 5-5 from the line.
 
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) was right behind her with 12 points and added a team-high six rebounds, while Sierra Taylor (Williamstown, N.J./Camden Catholic) chipped in with 11 points and a team-best three assists.
 
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) had a career-high four steals. 
 
KU made 21-of-24 of its free throws (87.5 percent) and won the turnover battle, 19-8, which led to a 13-3 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
Felisha Gibbs led four Washburn players in double-figures with 13 points on a perfect 6-6 shooting.
 
Alyxis Bowens was a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points, and Erika Lane added nine points and a game-high five assists.
 
Washburn had a major advantage on the glass, outrebounding Kutztown 45-19. The Ichabods also made seven more 3-pointers, 8-1, and shot 47.1 percent (24/51) while limiting the Golden Bears to 30.4 percent shooting (14/46).
 
When it returns to the States, KU takes a week off before returning to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. The Maroon and Gold hit the road for crossover games at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, Dec. 3 and Indiana (PA) on Sunday, Dec. 4. Both contests are scheduled to tipoff at 1 p.m.
