KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University men's basketball team took down Slippery Rock University on Sunday afternoon, 88-69, in a dominating performance inside Keystone Arena.
Kutztown (4-0, 2-0 PSAC) and Slippery Rock (2-3, 0-2) battled back-and-forth for the first six minutes of game action as the two teams were tied, 11-11, at the 13:53 mark in the first half.
The Golden Bears used a huge 38-16 spurt over the final 14 minutes of the half to run away from The Rock and closed the half with a commanding 49-27 lead.
KU held Slippery Rock at bay for the whole second half and ended up winning the game by 19 points, its fourth in a row to start the season.
Sophomore
Dan Cuevas (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) was tremendous for the second game in a row as he was one of six KU players to score in double-figures. He posted a career-high 19 points (8-10 FG) and five rebounds in a career-high 31 minutes.
Redshirt-sophomore
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) posted 14 points (5-11 FG, 2-3 3PT), while
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) had 13 (8-8 FT).
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) and
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) both added 12, while
Austin Beidelman (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) was KU's sixth player in double-figures with 10. Johnson also tied for the team-lead with five rebounds, while Ridgeway had his first career double-double with his 12 points, 10 assists and three steals.
Johnson moved into ninth all-time in career points in KU history on Sunday as he now sits at 1,305 for his career. He needs 38 more to move into eighth and is just 195 shy of becoming the fifth player in program history to record 1,500.
Slippery Rock was led by Naquil Jones, who posted 19 points and six rebounds. Merdic Green recorded 14 points, while George Chase and Amir Maddred added nine.
The Golden Bears held decisive advantages in points in the paint (42-24), points off turnovers (24-5) and fastbreak points (18-6).
KU returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. as it hosts Philadelphia University inside Keystone Arena in a non-conference matchup.
