INSTITUTE, W. Va. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team scored 93 points, shot 50 percent from the field and had a double-double from
Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia U.)) – all signs of a successful day. West Virginia State, however, made 14 3-pointers, grabbed 22 offensive rebounds and was +8 in turnover margin to down the Golden Bears 123-93 Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (1-1) were led by Heck's second straight 25-point game and first double-double of the season. She scored a season-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with four assists and two blocks. It came on the heels of a 25-point game Saturday evening in KU's win over Charleston.
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) scored 19 points, putting her at 985 for her career, and added eight rebounds.
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Kutztown with 11 points with three three-pointers.
Kutztown had 25 assists on 36 field goals, led by
Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy)'s career-high seven. Senior
Kara Funk (Dover, Pa./Dover) dished out five assists, while Heck, Altomare and freshman
Sierra Taylor (Williamstown, N.J./Camden Catholic) all added four apiece.
Kutztown led 27-26 after the first quarter, but West Virginia State's offense did not let down. The Yellow Jackets were +12 in rebounds, highlighted by 22 offensive rebounds. The added possessions resulted in 14 3-pointers and a 35-for-40 performance from the free-throw line.
West Virginia State held a 10-point advantage in the second quarter, 11 in the third and 10 in the fourth. It committed nine turnovers and forced 17 Kutztown turnovers, resulting in 23 points off turnovers for West Virginia State.
The Yellow Jackets had five double-digit scorers, four of which came off the bench.
The Golden Bears return to action on Nov. 19-20, when it opens conference play. Action at Keystone Arena opens with California University (PA) on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m.
