NCAA Tournament Bracket
KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Cara Griffith (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Prep) headed home the deciding goal with five seconds left in the first half to send the Kutztown University women's soccer team to its first-ever Sweet 16 with its 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon over the University of Charleston in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at Keystone Field.
The Golden Bears, who improved upon their school-record win total with their 18th on Sunday, out-shot the Golden Eagles 17-3, but relied on their timely goal in the 45th minute to send them to victory.
Schyler Ackerman (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) sent the high cross to Griffith from the left side, as Griffith, a freshman, netted her sixth game-winner of the year.
It was KU's second win over Charleston of the season (W, 2-1 on Sept. 3 at Keystone Field).
Sunday marked Kutztown's second-ever NCAA Tournament victory and first Second Round win, sending the nationally-ranked Golden Bears to the Sweet 16 next weekend for the first time in program history.
KU, the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Region, will face top-seeded West Chester University in the Atlantic Region Final on Friday, Nov. 18 – at West Chester – at a time to be determined. The winner will face the East Region champion in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 20.
The shutout by
Imani Taylor (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) (8-2) marked the team's 12th of the season, one shy of tying the school-record from 2009.
