CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University football team ran into one of the best teams in Division II on Saturday. KU had its seven-game winning streak snapped by sixth-ranked California University (PA) in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship game in a 49-7 loss at Adamson Stadium, ending Kutztown's season with a 7-4 record as the PSAC East champions.
California (PA) entered Saturday on a 13-game winning streak with the best scoring offense and seventh-best scoring defense in Division II – and showed why on Saturday.
KU threw for 217 of its 270 yards, while the Vulcans posted 421 yards with 251 through the air.
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) wasted no time putting his final mark on the KU record books. On KU's first drive, Williams hauled in a diving 30-yard catch to eclipse the school's all-time receiving record. A two-year team captain, he had 10 catches for 120 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown Saturday to close his career with 214 receptions for 2,970 yards and 31 touchdowns – all school-records.
Williams was one of 19 seniors recognized last week at Andre Reed Stadium. Over the last four years, the senior class led KU to 24 wins and a division title this season.
Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) ran for 38 yards to end his year with 1,189 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, both third-most in single-season school history.
Kutztown ended the day with 53 rushing yards, snapping its streak of 18 straight games with 100 or more.
Linebacker
Zack Delp (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), who closed his career starting in 34 consecutive games, went down with a game-ending injury in the first half and was unable to return. With his two first-half tackles, Delp finished his career with 295 career tackles, seventh in KU history.
Quarterback
Collin DiGalbo (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) returned to the lineup after missing last week. He threw for 218 yards and the fourth-quarter touchdown to Williams. Running-wise, DiGalbo finished the season with 421 rushing yards, the third-most single-season rushing yards for a KU quarterback in school history.
Defensively,
Kenny Williams (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (West Chester)) posted 11 tackles, including nine solo stops.
Tajier Jefferson (East Orange, N.J./Queen of Peace) had 10 and
Ahkee Cox-Cowan (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) finished with eight and an interception.
Kutztown had the first scoring opportunity of the game. On a nine-play, 64-yard drive, Williams hauled in the 30-yard catch and Reynolds churned out a 25-yard run on the drive, but a 30-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right to give the Vulcans back the ball.
Cox-Cowan hauled in an interception for the second straight week – his third of the season - during the first quarter.
Senior receiver Garry Brown has been Cal's playmaker all season, and led the charge in its first scoring drive of the day. Setup by a 20-yard punt return, he followed with a 30-yard catch on third-down to move the Vulcans into Kutztown territory and an eventual 1-yard touchdown run on 3rd-and-Goal from the 1-yardline. The Vulcans led 7-0 after the first quarter.
Brown finished the game with nine catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
A notable play to end the first quarter, Kutztown's
Jake Perry (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) forced a fumble inside the red-zone, but with the ball going out-of-bounds inside the 1-yardline, California (PA) kept possession. If the ball had hit the pylon, it would have been a touchback and Kutztown ball. The drive ended with a missed 33-yard field by the Vulcans to keep the game at 7-0 early in the second quarter.
California (PA) converted three first-downs on its next scoring drive, capped with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Michael Keir to Brown to give it a 14-0 lead over Kutztown with 9:09 to play in the first half. It was one of Keir's five touchdowns on the day.
Kutztown went from potentially stopping California (PA) on 4th-down and trailing by two scores heading into halftime, to letting up a 4th-down touchdown pass and a 23-second scoring drive in the final minute put the Vulcans up 28-0 at halftime.
Kutztown's defense held off the Vulcan offense down the stretch, but California (PA)'s defense remained the storyline.
