- Allentown Morning Call: "Delp, Kutztown finally get bragging rights over Bloomsburg"
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Saturday was another monumental game for the Kutztown University football team. KU jumped out to a 27-0 lead over Bloomsburg University in a 34-24 victory at Andre Reed Stadium – putting KU into sole possession of first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division.
It marked Kutztown's third win over Bloomsburg in the last 25 years – the first since its PSAC Championship season in 2011. Combined with West Chester's win over Shippensburg Saturday, Kutztown stands alone atop the PSAC East at 3-0 in the division, 3-3 overall.
For head coach
Jim Clements, it marked his first-ever win over Bloomsburg after getting as close as an overtime loss last season. Combined with his first-ever win over West Chester last week, Clements has now defeated all seven PSAC East teams in his third year at the helm of the Golden Bears.
Redshirt-freshman
Collin DiGalbo (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) moved to 3-0 since taking over as starting quarterback in Week 4. He showcased his throwing and running ability with 373 yards of total offense – 247 through the air and 126 on the ground – for four total touchdowns (two passing, two rushing).
His day was highlighted late in the first half. On a designed run on 3rd-and-3 from Kutztown's own 18-yardline, DiGalbo sprinted up the middle, evaded wimpy tacklers and went 82 yards for a touchdown. It marked the longest touchdown run by a KU quarterback in school history.
DiGalbo later ran for a 15-yard touchdown run on a broken play to cap his afternoon at 126 rushing yards – the first 100-yard game for a KU quarterback in 20 years (through 1997 season).
His two touchdown passes went to
Nathan Hollander (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) – 22 and three yards – for a four touchdown game.
While DiGalbo and the KU offense was applying heavy pressure on Bloomsburg to keep up, the Kutztown defense held the Huskies in check as KU built a 27-0 lead just over five minutes into the second quarter.
Bloomsburg entered the game averaging nearly 200 rushing yards per game, but was limited to 32 Saturday – the fewest in a game for Bloomsburg in the last 17 years.
The Huskies built some momentum with three straight touchdowns to cut the deficit to 27-17 with 9:43 to play. Kutztown responded though with an 11-play, 67-yard touchdown drive that churned up nearly 7:00 of clock to put KU back into comfortable position with a 34-17 lead with 2:53 to play. KU converted two late conversions on the drive - 3rd-and-13 on a 27-yard completion to
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), and a 4th-and-3 on a 15-yard completion to
Conor Sullivan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall).
It was Kutztown's longest scoring drive of the game, as its first four scores were all less than 3:00.
Kutztown ran for 295 of its 542 yards of offense, – its 14th straight game with 100 rushing yards - despite Bloomsburg entering the game ranked second in the PSAC in total defense at 340.4 per game.
Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) ran for his fourth 100-yard game in the last five weeks with 106 on Saturday. He also ran for a touchdown for his team-leading ninth of the year.
Hollander finished with six catches for 55 yards and two scores, but Williams shined as KU's top target of the day. He had a season-high nine catches for 94 yards to put him over 2,500 career receiving yards (2,590) – 267 off the school-record.
Kutztown's defense forced Bloomsburg to punt eight times, including five times in the first half.
Jalen Nieves (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) returned to the starting lineup and had a team-high 11 tackles, including three for-a-loss.
Zack Delp (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) added seven tackles, including the 250th of his career, to move into 10th all-time in KU history with 254 – 24 shy of Brian Bingnear in ninth. Saturday marked Delp's team-leading 29th straight start.
Riding a three-game winning streak, Kutztown looks ahead to East Stroudsburg University next weekend. Kickoff on the road at Eiler-Martin Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 15 is set for 7:05 p.m. The game will be televised live on The Comcast Network, through the American Sports Network.
