KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University women's soccer team recorded its second straight 1-0 shutout on Saturday afternoon, as it dominated possession against California (PA) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Keystone Field.
Kutztown (8-2, 6-2 PSAC) scored the lone goal of the game at the 36:37 mark in the first half and held the one-goal lead throughout the entirety of play. The Golden Bears won their fifth-consecutive game of the season, outscoring their opponents 10-2 in the process.
Schyler Ackerman (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) connected on the goal for the Golden Bears after senior
Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) nearly scored on a shot of her own. Curry was credited with the assist after her shot was deflected by the goalkeeper and ended up in Ackerman's possession.
Ackerman's goal was her second of the season, while Curry recorded her first assist of the season and sixth of her career. The assist also marked Curry's 50th career point (22 goals, 6 assists) at KU, just the 11th player in program history to achieve the impressive milestone.
KU completely dominated possession on Saturday afternoon, recording 29 shots to just three for California (PA). The Golden Bears also held a substantial 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) posted a team-high seven shot attempts, narrowly missing goals on multiple occasions. Fellow freshman
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) and sophomore
Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) each recorded five attempts.
KU goalie
Imani Taylor (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) had one save in the win, her fifth of the season. Vulcan goalkeeper Meghan Jayes recorded 15 saves.
The Golden Bears remain in fourth place in the PSAC standings with their 6-2 conference mark, just three points behind Edinboro for third. The Vulcans fell to 1-7-2 on the season and sit in 15th place.
Kutztown head coach
Erik Burstein picked up his 148th career win, needing just two to reach 150. He has compiled an impressive 125-55-13 record with the Golden Bears after posting a 23-29-2 record at Rutgers-Newark.
The Golden Bears head to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, Oct. 5, for a PSAC matchup at Eiler-Martin Stadium at 4 p.m.
