Late KU Rally Not Enough to Complete Comeback Against Bloomsburg

Video Highlights

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team was unable to come back from a 29-point deficit on Saturday despite scoring 34 points in the fourth quarter in a 76-70 setback against Bloomsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown inside Keystone Arena.

Bloomsburg (9-5, 6-4 PSAC) found itself in a comfortable spot to start the fourth quarter, as it was leading Kutztown (6-8, 4-7 PSAC) 63-36. However, the Maroon and Gold were able to scratch and claw their way back into the game thanks to a 31-8 run.  Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) was getting the crowd hyped up with her three late triples during the run. She finished the game with nine points, four rebounds and two assists.

Altomare extended her streak of consecutive games with a three-pointer to 14. She also hit multiple triples for the 13th time this season.

With only 25 seconds remaining in the contest, Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) went to the line as her team trailed 74-69. After sinking the first one, Lee stepped to the line to make it a one-possession game. Lee was able to convert the second free throw, but a free throw violation call meant that the game would remain 74-70.

KU then fouled Bloomsburg on the following possession and junior guard Morgan Klunk sealed the fate of the Golden Bears. Klunk finished the contest with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The 34-point quarter for the Golden Bears is the second highest total in a quarter for the team this season; their highest coming in the second quarter against Penn State Lehigh Valley.

Lee had a team-high 18 points while also coming away with five boards. She is now 11th all-time on the KU career scoring list with 1,070 points.

Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) was not far behind her teammate as she notched 17 points and 13 rebounds. Watson has now posted four consecutive double-doubles.

The Maroon and Gold received quality minutes off the bench from sophomore Keifonna Ferguson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) as she posted 11 points, three steals and five boards. Allison Girardi (Somerset, N.J./Immaculata) also provided solid relief dishing out three assists and a steal.

The Huskies of Bloomsburg were led by junior guard Mia Hopkins, who tallied 24 points and 11 rebounds. Not far behind Hopkins was fellow junior Alex Ross, who tallied 22 points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Kutztown held the advantage over the Huskies in second chance points (20-11), but Bloomsburg was able to one-up KU in the paint (48-36). The Maroon and Gold also found more production out of their bench as they outscored the Huskies 17-9 in bench points.

Kutztown will now have five days to recover as it looks to defend the den against The University of the Sciences on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.
