Baseball’s Late Comeback Not Enough in Setback in New York

HTML Box Score

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Ryan Cox went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in one of Kutztown University's two runs in the eighth inning, but the Golden Bears baseball team was unable to overcome a three-run deficit and four errors in a 3-2 non-conference loss on the road to Adelphi University on Wednesday afternoon at Bonomo Field.

Wednesday marked Cox's third three-hit game of the year and his first perfect outing at the plate of his freshman season.

Kutztown trailed 3-0 through five innings, two of which were unearned, but it nearly overcame the deficit in the eighth inning. With two on and two outs, Cox hit an RBI single to score Ricky Gorrell, and was followed by another RBI single from  Drew DeShong to score Thomas Romano. A fly-out to center field ended the threat for Kutztown in its comeback bid.

Adelphi used six pitchers as Kyle Garrison pitched into the fifth for his first win of the season. Nikolas Batas pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the year.

Starter Bobby Reddick threw three innings in the loss. He was relieved by David Brown, who threw 1.1 innings and allowed two runs – none earned. Matt Matricardi and Peter Masterson combined to not allow a hit in the final 3.2 innings, highlighted by three strikeouts by Matricardi.

Kutztown returns to conference play this weekend. It plays at Millersville University on Friday, April 17 at 1 p.m., and hosts the Marauders on Saturday, April 18 at North Campus Field at 1 p.m.
