Lacrosse Kicks off 2015 Season with 16-4 Victory on Wednesday

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team commenced its 2015 campaign on Wednesday afternoon in South Carolina, taking down West Virginia Wesleyan College in nonconference action, 16-4.
 
Kutztown (1-0) started out on a scoring tear, taking a 7-0 lead after 10 minutes of play and holding a 13-1 advantage at the end of the first half. Seven different Golden Bears tallied goals to lead the squad to victory and give West Virginia Wesleyan its first loss of the season (4-1).
 
Junior Taylor Sandin notched a career-high in the contest, leading the way with four goals for KU. Seniors Taylor Stone and Jillian Spencer each recorded hat tricks, while Spencer tacked on an assist.
 
Devan Davis and Sarah Gabriele tallied two goals apiece, while Kelli Serpi and Madison Carlucci each netted one.
 
Cara Lord dished out a team-high three assists, with Gabriele recording the final two helpers.
 
It is Kutztown's first win in a season opener since the 2012 season.
 
Kutztown held a 15-7 advantage in draw controls. Courtney O'Neill secured four and Sandin brought in three, while Gabriele and Stone each recorded two draw controls. The duo of O'Neill and Sandin combined for eight groundballs.
 
On the defensive end, O'Neill led the way with four caused turnovers and Gabrielle forced three.
 
Abby Cox started in net for Kutztown, playing the first half and earning the win with three saves and one goal against. Newcomer Jen Bergey took over in the second half, recording four saves.
 
West Virginia Wesleyan scored the first three goals of the second half, but the Golden Bears quickly regained control of the momentum and the possession to close out the win.
 
Notably, the Bobcats have averaged over 20 goals per game over their first four games, while the Golden Bears limited them to just four on Wednesday.
 
Kutztown returns back north this weekend, traveling to Chestnut Hill College this Saturday, March 14 for a 4 p.m. contest.
