Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area)'s 23 points and six three-pointers, the Kutztown University women's basketball team recorded an 88-65 win in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover game against the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown inside Keystone Arena on Friday night.
Kutztown (5-2, 3-2 PSAC) and Pitt-Johnstown (4-4, 2-3) were evenly matched through the first three minutes of play, but the Golden Bears finished the first quarter on a 13-3 run to take an 11-point lead into the second period, 20-9.
Pitt-Johnstown battled hard in the beginning of the second quarter, but KU went on a 12-0 run starting at the 7:00 mark in the quarter to take a 37-17 lead with two minutes to go in the half. The Golden Bears went into the half with a 42-23 lead over the Mountain Cats.
KU and Pitt-Johnstown played an evenly matched third quarter. The Golden Bears were outscored by the Mountain Cats 24-23 in the period and led 65-47 heading into the final quarter.
The Golden Bears used a huge 14-0 spurt in the middle of the final quarter and finished the fourth period of play on a 16-6 run to get the home victory over Pitt-Johnstown.
Altomare tied career-highs with 23 points and six three-pointers. She was 7-of-13 from the field and 6-of-11 from behind the arc, one three shy of tying the KU single-game record. Altomare leads the PSAC with 3.4 threes per game. It was her fourth consecutive double-digit game scoring game of the season. Altomare has recorded two or more threes in all seven of KU's games thus far.
Senior guard
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) posted 18 points and a game-high seven assists. She scored 15 or more points for the fourth time this season and has recorded three or more assists in six games. Lee sits at 962 career points, 38 shy of the 1,000-point milestone.
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) recorded 13 points, five rebounds and a career-high five steals. She has scored in double-digits in all seven games for the Golden Bears.
Sophomore forward
Keifonna Ferguson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) played well, posting eight points and a career-high eight rebounds.
Gina Lewis (Atlantic City, N.J./Holy Spirit),
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) and
Kara Funk (Dover, Pa./Dover) each scored six points for Kutztown.
Kutztown held a huge 18-5 advantage in second-chance points over the Mountain Cats. The Golden Bears shot 48 percent from the field, while holding Pitt-Johnstown to 36 percent.
The Mountain Cats were led by Nicole Corcoran's team-high 14 points. Kayla DeCriscio scored 11 points off the bench and Victoria Moreland contributed eight. Olivia McCabe recorded seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Kutztown is back in action at Keystone Arena tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2:00 p.m., against Indiana University of Pennsylvania in another PSAC Crossover matchup.
