Women's Basketball Defeats Cheyney 84-58 in Season-Opener

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team defeated Cheyney University in its season-opener on Wednesday night, 84-58, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup inside Keystone Arena.
 
Kutztown (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) got out of the gate strong, scoring 10 of the first 12 points in the opening quarter. The Golden Bears led 18-4 at the 4:29 mark in the first quarter and secured a 27-12 lead at the end of the frame.
 
KU extended its lead to 47-25 by the end of the first half behind strong play from junior Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) and senior Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional). Watson had 14 points and five rebounds in the first half, while Lee contributed with 12 points and four assists.
 
The Golden Bears maintained their lead over the Wolves in the second half, outscoring Cheyney 37-33. It was the 15th consecutive victory for KU over Cheyney. The Golden Bears haven't lost to the Wolves since the 2007-08 season.
 
Lee led the Golden Bears in scoring with 21 points, one shy of her career-high. She also had three rebounds and five assists.
 
Watson was also one point away from her career-high in points, scoring 18 in the contest. She was 8-of-11 from the field and managed to grab eight rebounds.
 
Junior Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) scored 16 points, including 4-of-11 from behind the arc. Her 11 attempts from three-point range mark a new career-high. She also chipped in with five rebounds and a career-high four steals.
 
Freshman Mariah Maciejewski (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) was phenomenal off the bench in her first collegiate contest. She was the fourth Golden Bear in double-figures with 10 points. She recorded a game-high 12 rebounds and had four assists.
 
Gina Lewis (Atlantic City, N.J./Holy Spirit) contributed with six points and seven rebounds off the bench for Kutztown. Sabrina Jackson (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) had a team-high two blocks.
 
KU outrebounded Cheyney, 48-34, and had 25 assists compared to seven for the Wolves. Kutztown held Cheyney to 38 percent shooting from the field and 14 percent from behind the arc.
 
Cheyney (0-1, 0-1) was led by Kyra Hines-Allen, who recorded 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Aerie DeJesus scored 15 points, while Amber Genwright chipped in with 12 points and three assists.
 
Kutztown returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. at Edinboro University in a PSAC matchup inside McComb Fieldhouse.
