Video HighlightsKUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team opened its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule on Wednesday night with a 105-83 victory over Cheyney University at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (2-0, 1-0 PSAC East) have scored 100+ in each of their opening two games this year, the first stretch of consecutive games scoring in triple-digits under 16th-year head coach
Bernie Driscoll, and the first since the 1988-89 season.
77 combined free throws and 58 fouls dictated the pace of much of Wednesday night's affair, but Kutztown's ability to convert from the field and at the line prevailed. KU shot 52.4 percent from the field and 77.3 percent from the free throw line. It posted a 34-for-44 effort from the free throw line for the third-most made in a game in school history, one off the school-record from 2011.
Five players scored in double figures for Kutztown. Junior
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) posted his first double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds on an effective 10-for-15 shooting.
Freshman
Dan Cuevas (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) played well in his first career start with 16 points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes. Sophomore guard
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) had 14 points and a game-high six assists, and
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) and
Howard Sellars (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area (Saint Peter's)) scored in double figures for the second straight game with 12 apiece.
Coming off a school-record 15 three-pointers on Saturday, Kutztown shot 5-of-13 from beyond the arc on Wednesday, including two apiece from Connolly and Sellars.
Cheyney posted two 20-point scorers. Rafiq Marshall finished with 23 points, while Dominique Davis had 20 and five rebounds on 9-of-18 shooting.
The Golden Bears get a true test this weekend out West, when they travel to PSAC West favorite Mercyhurst, and Edinboro (picked third). KU plays at Edinboro on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 3 p.m. and at Mercyhurst on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m.
