KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Home court never felt so good for the Kutztown University women's volleyball team. After traveling for weekend tournaments the last two weeks, KU competed at its own Keystone Arena for the first time in nearly a month Friday night. It didn't disappoint as KU opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) divisional play with a straight-set win over Cheyney University.
17 Golden Bears were featured in Kutztown's three-set win. KU hit an effective .500 and tallied assists on 41 of its 45 kills.
Sophomore
McKenzie Fagan (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) tallied a career-high 13 kills with just one error on 21 swings Friday night. She added three block assists and clearly took advantage of added playing time.
Shannon Restrepo (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) and
Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area) added six kills apiece, while Restrepo played an all-around role with 18 assists, seven digs and five service aces.
10 players tallied at least one kill for Kutztown, as Restrepo and
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) (15 assists) acted as the playmakers up front.
Defensively,
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley), on the night she was honored for recording her 1,000th career dig last weekend, moved into seventh all-time at KU with 1,037 career digs. She passed 2014 alum
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) and looks ahead to sixth-place Austin Kinney's mark of 1,096.
The Golden Bears look to build some momentum in the PSAC Eastern Diviison this weekend. They host a talented West Chester team on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. from Keystone Arena.
