Women’s Basketball Falls in Double-Overtime Clash with East Stroudsburg, 80-73

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team battled East Stroudsburg University for a full 50 minutes on Sunday afternoon, but the visiting Warriors scored the first 11 points of the second overtime period to help secure a 80-73 victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action from Keystone Arena.
 
Kutztown (6-12, 5-9 PSAC) led 47-45 with six seconds remaining in the second half with East Stroudsburg (8-10, 7-7)'s Helena Gemmell at the free-throw line for two. Gemmell converted both to tie the game, and tracked all the way back on defense to block Natalya Lee's game-winning three-point attempt to send the game into overtime.
 
The Warriors began the first extra-time stanza on a 6-0 run and led by as many as seven points with 1:32 remaining. After Elisa Gaffney and Brianna Morales each hit layups to cut the deficit, freshman Kalee Fuegel entered the game and nailed a clutch three-pointer to bring the game within two with 32 seconds remaining (59-57). Lee hit four-straight free throws, allowing Kelsey Watson to tie up the game (63-63) via two free throws with 15 seconds remaining.
 
ESU got off to a fast start again in the second overtime period, but this time the home team could not catch up. The Warriors started 4-for-4 from the field to kick start an 11-0 run that put the game out of reach.
 
The game contained 94 combined free throws, 66 fouls and 59 turnovers.
 
The Maroon and Gold were able to stay in the game due to a strong free-throwing shooting performance (32-of-42).  Its 32 made free throws are the most in a game since Jan. 15, 2000 when KU made 33 against Millersville.
 
Kutztown's 32 turnovers and 35 fouls were both eight higher than any other game this season.
 
In the first half, Kutztown pushed out to an 11-6 lead (12:08) before falling cold from the field. The Golden Bears went the next seven minutes without adding to their total, while the Warriors pieced together a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Gaffney put life back into KU with four-straight points, followed by a 6-0 run by the Maroon and Gold to retake the lead (21-20). The teams traded free throws and layups to a 27-27 draw at the end of the first.
 
Lee scored a game-high 19 points in 42 minutes of action. She converted only two field goals, but nailed 15 of her 18 free throw attempts for a new career high (previous was seven). She also brought down four boards, snagged two steals and dished out a team-high three assists.
 
Gaffney made the most of her 20 minutes on the floor, shooting 4-of-7 from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe for a career-high-tying 15 points. She also brought down six boards.
 
Nicole Donahue brought in a team-high 11 rebounds and added nine points off a 5-of-6 output from the free-throw line.  Watson recorded eight points and eight rebounds.
 
Advia Campbell started the game with two quick blocks, and finished with four blocks and four rebounds. Morales notched six points, four boards and two assists, while Fuegel made KU's only three-pointer on the day.
 
ESU's Allison Howard led the Warriors with 17 points and four rebounds. Gemmell finished with an impressive stat line of 13 points, five rebounds, eight steals and three blocks. Michelle Boggs was their leading rebounder with seven.
 
The last time the Kutztown women played in a double overtime game was also a loss at the hands of East Stroudsburg, a 56-52 setback on Feb. 4, 2012.
 
The Golden Bears will head to Mansfield on Wednesday, Jan. 28 for a PSAC matchup starting at 5:30 p.m. Kutztown won the first matchup between the two teams this season, 93-61, in the second game of the season.
