KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's soccer team got off to a quick and explosive start against the 16th-ranked California University (PA) Vulcans, as the Golden Bears pulled off an upset win by a score of 2-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest from Keystone Field on Saturday afternoon.

In the early minutes of the game, Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) found a ball in the box that squeezed through two Vulcan defenders.  With a quick move, Malanga was behind the Vulcan defensive line and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.  It was not long after that the Maroon and Gold would strike again, as Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) took matters into her own hands by ripping a ball into the back of the net from 22 yards out with her left foot.

It's a bittersweet conquest for KU, as the Golden Bears had their postseason run halted by the Vulcans last season. Until today, California has been the victor in the past seven contests. This is the first win for KU over Cal-U since 2009.

Kutztown was outshot by California (4-2-1, 4-2 PSAC) by a total of 13-8, but the Golden Bears were able to have one more shot on target, and two more shots that were able to find the back of the net.

Freshman Deanna Messner (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) is proving her worth in between the posts, as she was able to come away with five saves and another shutout under her belt in her short time wearing a Kutztown uniform.

To make matters more impressive for Kutztown, this is yet another shutout for the team, notching its third of the season.  After seven games into the season, the Golden Bears defense has been rock solid with six goals against.

Kutztown now improves its overall record to 4-3, and are .500 in the PSAC at 3-3.  The Maroon and Gold will have three days rest until they are back on the road, as they will be traveling to Bloomsburg for a PSAC contest on Sept. 30, at 4 p.m.
