DOVER, Del. – The ninth-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team had a busier than expected Friday afternoon and competed in six matches on the opening day of the Capital Classic. Kutztown went 3-3 and stands in fourth place after the first day of competition.
The tournament was altered and will be played as two separate events with six matches per day. There will only be two days of competition as the invite was shortened due to potential snow on Sunday.
The Golden Bears (59-33) split their six matches on Friday, including an opening win against North Carolina Central (917-803) and an upset-win over fourth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson (913-873).
Kutztown had three bowlers average more than 190 pins per game on Friday. Senior
Brooke Bower (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) led the team with a 194 average.
Kayla Maselkevich (Drums, PA/Hazleton Area) was second at 193.9, followed by
Taylor Strothmann (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) at 192.3. All three Golden Bears bowled four games.
15th-ranked Delaware State, the host of the invitational, leads after day one. 13th-ranked Adelphi is second, followed by Fairleigh Dickinson and Kutztown. Saint Francis (NY) is fifth, North Carolina Central is sixth, Howard is seventh and New Jersey City ranks eighth.
