KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In a rematch of a game played last week, the Kutztown University women's soccer team was determined to play to a different result as last. Led by its quartet of team captains, Kutztown defeated Edinboro University 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinal game at Keystone Field.

The Golden Bears (14-4) advance to the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 7 and will play West Chester University at 3:30 p.m. at East Stroudsburg University. The winner will move onto the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. against the winner of ESU and California (PA) (1 p.m. on Friday).

Before Tuesday's game, the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) / Continental Tire National Poll was released. Following a 1-1 week, Kutztown slid one spot to 19th in Division II. It is the third straight week KU has been featured in the national poll.

Each of the four Golden Bear captains played a significant role in the 2-0 shutout victory. In the 20th minute, Edinboro's first shot of the game got past the KU keeper, but senior captain Hanna Fenstermacher (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) cleared the ball off the back line to prevent the Fighting Scots (10-7-2) from taking an early lead on the road.

Kutztown continued to apply pressure in the first half, and struck for the first goal in the 35th minute. Substitute Brooke May (East Berlin, Pa./Dover Area) rifled a shot from atop the penalty box, and as the save bounced away from the Edinboro keeper due to the hard shot, senior captain Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scooped up the rebound and scored her team- and career-high 10th goal of the season.

Costello ranks fifth in program history with 24 career goals, and is two away from moving into fourth. Her two points on Tuesday moved her into a tie for fourth place in KU history with 68 career points.

The Golden Bears went on to out-shoot the Fighting Scots 13-1 in the first half, but knew that the second goal of the game may be the most important. With Costello on the sidelines due to a physically strong game up front, captains Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) and Mariah Dimm (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) connected on a corner kick for the momentum-holding insurance goal.

Dimm, a right-footed forward, nearly bent in her corner kick attempt from the right side and found Malanga at the far-post for the header and a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute. It was her career-high seventh goal of the season.

From there, the Golden Bears staved off a few Edinboro chances and were able to secure their ninth shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Deanna Messner (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) controlled the penalty box area and tallied a save in her eighth shutout of the year. It ties her for third in KU single-season history.

Kutztown fell 2-0 to West Chester earlier this season, and KU was also defeated by the Golden Rams in the quarterfinals of last year's PSAC Tournament, but the Golden Bears had the last laugh with the programs first NCAA Tournament win by defeating West Chester in the third matchup of the season.
