MILLSBORO, Del. – The 13th-ranked Kutztown University women's bowling team won two matches on Saturday and fell by less than 30 pins in three games, including two of the top-five ranked teams in the country, as KU stands in 11th place after the second day of the three-day UMES Hawk Classic.
The Golden Bears (25-18) defeated Adelphi (936-870) and Monmouth (981-898), but dropped their Saturday matches to Monmouth in the opener (884-937), fourth-ranked Vanderbilt (1005-1035), Franklin Pierce (818-830), and third-ranked Sam Houston State (928-940).
Kutztown holds a 6-6 record though two days of competition, and ranks 11th of 18 teams in the tournament with a total pinfall of 10,819. Fairleigh Dickinson leads the way at 10-2 and 12,255 total pins, followed by Vanderbilt (11,650) and Sam Houston State (11,632).
Five Golden Bears competed on Saturday in all six matches.
Dakota May (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) held a 197.8 average that included a day-high of 249 in the 30-pin setback to nationally-ranked Vanderbilt, and three 200-pin games.
Lauren Stamm (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) was second on the team with a 192.8 average that included two 200-pin games.
Kayla Maselkevich (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area) had two games over a 200 and held an average of 179.7,
Christine Gordon (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) held a 178.7 average, and
Taylor Strothmann (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) averaged a 176.
The Golden Bears wrap up the UMES Hawks Classic, hosted in Delaware by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, on Sunday, Nov. 16 beginning with a match against Saint Francis Brooklyn at 8:30 a.m.
