Erik Burstein made history on Saturday afternoon. Kutztown's 3-0 win over Lock Haven University at Keystone Field marked his 97th victory at the helm of the Golden Bears, tying him for the all-time program record.
Burstein improved his career record at Kutztown on Saturday to 97-45-11, tying Jeff Schellenberger's record of 97 from 1989-91 and 1998-2006. Burstein is in his eighth season at the control of the Golden Bears and holds a .670 winning percentage (first in program history). Schellenberger's record stands at 97-107-16 in his 12 years at Kutztown. Burstein's overall coaching numbers at KU and Rutgers-Newark sits at 120-74-13.
"I have a huge passion for this university, and to be considered with this accolade is something that I take great passion for," Burstein said. "As good or bad of a coach that somebody is, the bottom line is you need good players to get results. We have had a great string of great players, and this is just as much credit to them as it is to me."
The Golden Bears (6-3, 5-3 PSAC) brought their A-game for Bustein's potential record-tying afternoon.
Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) scored a quick goal in the ninth minute that marked one of two goals on the afternoon for the talented sophomore.
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) scored her fifth goal in three games with a goal outside the 18-yard box right after halftime in the 50th minute. Curry scored her second of the game on a sliding attempt that knocked in a ball sent into the box by
Sam Busillo (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove). Curry and Malanga also picked up assists in the contest.
The Kutztown defense was stout once again. It picked up its fourth shutout of the season and second in the team's last three games. Freshman goalkeeper
Deanna Messner (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) continues to impress this season as she kept the Bald Eagles (2-8, 2-7 PSAC) off the scoreboard with three saves.
The Golden Bears aim to push Burstein over the top and have him stand alone atop the record books in the team's next game, Wednesday, Oct. 8, at home against Seton Hill University. KU defeated Seton Hill, 2-0, on the road last year.
