KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team concluded this weekend's KU Classic with a 3-0 win over Davis & Elkins University Saturday evening at Keystone Arena. It responded well from its 3-0 setback to Southern New Hampshire University earlier on Saturday.
KU vs. So. New Hampshire
Kutztown battled through three tough sets against Southern New Hampshire University, but was unable to take a set during the Saturday morning match as part of the Kutztown Classic at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (1-2) were competitive in all three sets, recording scores of 21, 22, and 24.
The first set (21-25) saw 10 ties and five lead changes. KU remained close on the scoreboard until the Penmen (2-0) capitalized on five of the last six points.
Kutztown performed efficiently in the second set (22-25), striking 10 kills and only committing three errors. However, it was not enough to match SNHU's 18 kills as they held the lead the entire set.
The Golden Bears struggled to gain the lead again in the third set (24-26), until freshman
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) served two aces to put her team up 22-20. KU could not hold off the strong Penmen attack, however, and SNHU took the final set and match.
Freshman
Liama Goodrich (Birdsboro, PA/Daniel Boone) and sophomore
Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) each led the team with eight kills. Brake recorded six digs to go along with her two service aces and freshman
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) added 20 assists.
KU vs. Davis & Elkins
Stringer finished the match with 15 kills, totaling 54 for the year, while freshman
Liama Goodrich (Birdsboro, PA/Daniel Boone) added nine more.
Emily Kopinski (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) added two service aces while KU got additional help from
Morgynn McKenzie (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) and senior
Emily Heppler (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) with seven digs a piece. Freshman
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City)'s 29 assists give her 129 this season.
Davis & Elkins came out firing in the first set, taking 5-1 and 7-3 leads. KU knotted the score at 11, before taking the set 25-18 with the help of service aces from McKenzie and Kopinski.
The Golden Bears got into gear for the start of the second set, rushing out to a 6-1 lead. The push continued as Kopinski put together a series of quality serves, setting up Stringer to smash four kills within seven KU points. Kutztown held off a late Senator surge to win the set 25-14.
The tag team attack of Stringer and Conti proved to be too much for the Senators in the third set (25-20). The duo pieced together six kills in the third set alone, giving Kutztown the final set and match.
Kutztown heads to Shepherdstown, W.V. on Friday, Sept. 13 to take on Shepherd University to begin the Mountain East/PSAC Crossover Tournament.
