KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team went against one of its toughest rivals Tuesday night. It showed strong signs that it has what it takes to hang with eighth-ranked Bloomsburg University, but was unable to overcome a pair of momentum-shifting first half goals in a 5-0 setback at University Field.
The Golden Bears (3-3) used Tuesday night's non-conference clash against the Huskies (4-3) as their final tune up for conference competition, which begins on Friday, Sept. 27.
Neither team recorded a shot in the first 18 minutes of play, as the majority of the action occurred in the middle of the field. Both teams had opportunities in front of the opposing net, but suffocating defenses on both sides quickly neutralized the attack once entering the circle.
Following a scoreless 26 minutes to open the game, Bloomsburg put together two goals within two minutes to swing the momentum in its favor. Sam Peters opened the scoring with her first of three goals off the bench with a shot off a rebound in front of the Kutztown goalkeeper. One minute later, Bloomsburg connected on two passes off a corner as Samantha Facciolla found the back of the cage.
The Huskies scored three more times within an 11-minute stretch in the middle of the second half as they held the ball in Kutztown territory for most of the half.
Sophomore defender
Erin Danner (Marysville, PA/Susquenita) remained active on the back line for the Golden Bears and picked up her team-leading fifth defensive save of the season.
Kutztown now prepares for back-to-back conference games this weekend. It hosts Slippery Rock on Friday, Sept. 27 in a rematch of a 2-1 Kutztown win on Sept. 14. Game time is set for 4 p.m. Kutztown also hosts Indiana University (PA) on Saturday, Sept. 28 beginning at 1 p.m.
