SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team opened this weekend's Mountain East / Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover Tournament Friday night, Sept. 13 with a 3-2 win over host Shepherd University.
It took all five sets for the Golden Bears (3-2) to get the victory, squeezing out a 16-14 win in the final set.
The KU front line was led by sophomore
Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) with 14 kills and eight blocks. Senior
Nicole Brumbley (Oxford, PA/Oxford) added eight kills and junior
Danielle Van Buren (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) put away another seven kills. Sophomore
Emily Kopinski (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) continued her dominance at the service line, recording four aces, while freshman
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) contributed 33 assists from the setter position. Junior
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) and freshman
Morgynn McKenzie (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) each added 14 digs on the defensive side of the ball, a season-high for McKenzie.
Kutztown started off slow in the match, struggling to convert in the first set. The Golden Bears recorded only four kills off 28 total attacks, while committing eight attack errors. The Rams took the first set, 25-13.
KU improved on its offensive efficiency the next three sets, tallying double-digit kills in each set. The Golden Bears took the second and third sets (25-21) and (25-22), before dropping the fourth to the Rams (24-26), sending the match into a tiebreaking fifth set.
With the win, Kutztown improves to 3-2, while Shepherd drops to 2-3.
The Golden Bears get back to the action on Saturday, Sept. 14 with matches against West Virginia State (11 a.m.) and Fairmont State (5 p.m.).
