Marcel Quarterman Hired as Kutztown’s Defensive Backs Coach

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Head coach Drew Folmar and the Kutztown University football team have announced the hiring of Marcel Quarterman as the new defensive backs coach. Quarterman will work specifically with the safeties.

Quarterman comes to Kutztown after four years at Division I Lafayette College as an offensive assistant, specifically wide receivers. He was also responsible for the punt return unit in 2012 and guided the Patriot League Rookie of the Year to the top punt return average in the league. Quarterman has also coached numerous all-conference wide receivers in his four years at Lafayette.

“I'm really excited to get back working on the defensive side of the ball,” Quarterman said. “Especially with Ross (Pennypacker) and his extensive defensive background, I feel we have a great staff in place to succeed in the upcoming season.”

“Marcel is energetic, enthusiastic, and fits into what we are looking for and trying to accomplish,” Folmar said. “I think our kids in the secondary will benefit from his offensive experience. Marcel's experience on both sides of the ball will give both the players and coaches a unique perspective.”

Quarterman also played a significant role in recruiting for the Leopards, attracting student-athletes to Lafayette on a national level.

In his first season as a coach in 2009, he saw the Leopards' passing offense take off with a senior quarterback and a talented wide receiver corps. Lafayette set records for passing yards, touchdowns passes and season completions.

Quarterman previously coached on the defensive side of the ball in 2008 as the secondary coach at Franklin and Marshall College. A Philadelphia native, he also handled recruiting responsibilities for most of the Delaware Valley.

“Having previously worked on offense, I feel it will be an advantage for our secondary because I will be able to teach our guys some of the offensive schemes they will see,” Quarterman said. “From how the receivers will be running their routes, to some changes and adjustments the defense can expect to see throughout a game, I think it will give our guys the upper hand on the mental side of the game.”

A 2008 graduate of Lafayette and former defensive back at Lafayette from 2004-08, Quarterman served as a team captain and earned All-Patriot League First-Team honors at free safety in 2012. Quarterman played in 10 games and finished with two interceptions, including one that he ran back for a touchdown at Georgetown. The Philadelphia native also made 54 tackles.

He was named the Lafayette Freshman of the Year in 2004 and is a three-time Patriot League Champion.

“Marcel was highly recommended by (defensive coordinator John Loose) at Lafayette,” Folmar said. “Everyone we spoke to throughout the Patriot League spoke highly of him and we are very excited to have him here.”

He replaces Dennis Iezzi, who retired in January.
