Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown nearly erased a 13-point second half deficit, but visiting Millersville held on for a 63-58 win in PSAC East action at Keystone Arena.
The Marauders took a 51-38 lead after a free throw by Aurielle Mosely with 13:34 to play, but a bucket by
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) ignited a 15-3 run for KU. Bonenberger,
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) and
Tanejha Smith (Allentown, PA/William Allen) combined for all 15 points in the run as the Golden Bears tied the game at 53-53 after Campbell stole the ball and went in for a fast break layup with 6:15 remaining.
Mashira Newman scored with 5:52 to go to get the lead back for MU, followed by a free throw by Campbell to pull KU back within one. Mosley hit two sets of free throws sandwiched around a successful trip to the line for Bonenberger to extend the Millersville lead to 61-56 with two minutes to play.
Kutztown cut the lead to three when
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) missed a shot, got her own rebound and nailed a jumper with 1:24 remaining. But the Golden Bears turned the ball over on their next two possessions and missed a layup in the closing seconds. Newman iced the game with two foul shots with just two seconds left in the game.
Wood led Kutztown with 16 points – 12 in the first half – on 8-of-16 shooting. She also had three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Bonenberger scored 12 points and was perfect on six free throw attempts. Campbell scored all 10 of her points in the second half and matched Bonenberger with six rebounds.
Arianna Apostolopoulos (Yonkers, NY/Ursuline) led KU with seven boards and added a career-high two blocks. Fellow freshman
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) also blocked career-high two shots in the game.
Mosley had a monster game in the win for Millersville with 24 points and 18 rebounds. She hit 9-of-16 field goals and had a double-double in the first half. Newman finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Carly Gallagher added 10 points.
In the first half, Wood went 6-of-9 from the floor to nearly single-handedly keep Kutztown within striking distance. Mosley, however, powered the Marauders to a 41-31 advantage at the intermission with 13 points and 11 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
Millersville outrebounded Kutztown in the first half 32-18, but KU regrouped and outworked the Marauders on the glass in the second half 28-25 to fuel the comeback bid.
KU was also successful getting behind the MU defense on numerous occasions and held a 14-6 advantage on fast break points.
Despite using just three reserves the entire game, the Golden Bear bench of Smith,
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) and
Aly York (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) outscored its counterparts 16-6.
Kutztown (13-10, 11-8 PSAC East) remained fourth in the PSAC East with the loss, two games behind third place Shippensburg and a game ahead of fifth place West Chester.
The Golden Bears host Cheyney on February 20 at 5:30 p.m.
